CSD Adopts New Grading Structure For Final Term of School Year

Canyons District recognizes the “new now” prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic has forced a period of adjustment for families. To ease the minds of students and parents in this time of distance learning, CSD will put into place a modified grading structure for the final term.

The temporary grading schedule was designed so that no student would receive a failing grade for a current class while also providing some feedback about a student’s progress. This will hopefully reduce anxiety about academic standing and progress toward graduation, address equity issues, and support students as they are becoming used to a new way of learning.

Under the plan that will be used for the final grading period of the 2020 school year:

  • CSD elementary schools will not issue grades, such as the usual 3, 2, 1 system, but parents will receive information about the progress of students.
  • CSD middle school students will receive A, B, Passing or No Grade grades.
  • CSD high school students will receive A, B, Passing or Incomplete grades.

At both the middle and high school levels, students who earn 85 to 100  percent in a class would receive an A. Students who earn 70 to 84  percent would qualify to receive a B.  Forty-five to 69  percent would result in a Passing grade.

CSD Offers Counseling, Self-Care Strategies for Coping with COVID-19

We’ve countered COVID-19’s assault on our physical health by social distancing and working and educating our children from home. But what can, and should, we be doing to safeguard our mental health?

World health experts who have argued for flattening the COVID-19 curve are now warning of a second coronavirus wave of depression, anxiety and emotional exhaustion that could last long after the infectious disease threat has waned.

“It’s important to take care of yourself after any traumatic event,” says BJ Weller, Director of Canyons District’s Responsive Services Department, which oversees counseling and social-emotional supports in schools. “But this health crisis has been particularly worrisome from a mental wellness perspective, because the steps we’ve needed to take to respond can make it harder to cope emotionally.” Social distancing has left many of us socially isolated and economically vulnerable. We are grieving the loss of loved ones and important rituals, from weddings to graduation ceremonies, even as we lose connection with family and friends, the very people to whom we turn to mourn our losses.

But students and parents can take comfort knowing they’re not alone, Weller says. “We’re all going through this together, and help is available.” Throughout the soft closure of Utah’s schools, CSD social workers, psychologists and counselors have been proactively checking-in with students by email or phone. As the growing need for mental health supports has become apparent, the Department of Responsive Services is now launching an online behavioral supports request form that parents can easily access from home.

A Message from Mr. Watts

Good Evening Mountaineers,

The day I have been dreading through this process has come.  As you are now aware, the Governor declared that school will remain on a soft closure for the remainder of the year.  Meaning we will continue with online learning through the end of the school year.  I hate this news.  I do not have all of the answers for the questions that are going on in your heads, but I want to give you some information that we are trying to figure out processes for.

Our school is compiling lists for all students who have not logged into CANVAS courses.  We have been and will continue be calling to see how we can help you to get logged into all classes.  The teachers can’t help you if they can’t reach you!  Please log in or contact us if you need help!

We are currently working at a district level to determine the grading procedures for the 4th term.  We will be completing this district-wide so we have to wait until we have more directives for that.  Keep working hard and we will do all we can to help you be successful.

Many questions have come in about personal items.  We are going to work out a systematic process for retrieval of the items.  We are still not allowed to have students enter the building so we will need to work out a process.  Please be patient while we work this out.  If it is something you need immediately please email me and I will set up a time for you to pick things up.

We are still willing to hand out Chromebooks to those who need them.  We also still have math books that some may need to pick up.  We are currently planning on being available to distribute Chromebooks and math books on Tuesdays and Thursday from 9:00 – 10:00 am and 1:00 – 2:00 pm. If you need to schedule a different time please call the school at (801) 826-7400 and I will work to facilitate that.

I am struggling to find something happy to say about this situation, but what I can tell you is that I refuse to give up my positive outlook.  So, for now I will focus on the positive!  What is the best thing that happened to you today or over spring break?  Mine was I was able to have a Google Meet with all the teachers and hear something they enjoyed about spring break and just get the chance to see all of their faces.  I highly recommend that you log in to live time with your teachers.  They need it!  They are feeling sad and miss your faces.  I don’t know if you students know this, but we kind of like you!  More than anything, we miss you, we care about you and we know this news is hard.  Today, with this news it is more important than ever that you be nice to your parents!

Take care!

Mr. Watts
