School Community Council Meeting Notes

Council Members Present:Cassie Smith, Diane Edtl, Mike Adams, Danielle Samora, Aimee Payne, Rachel Anderson, Nicole Brinkerhoff, Kim Adams, Amanda Sessions

  1. Roll Call and Welcome
    1. Rachel mentioned that at the most recent SCC training the trainers shared notes that they are going to be encouraging schools to use and should be shared out later.

    1. EWS Data
      1. Reviewed data from the early warning system in Canyon School District data dashboard.
      2. Discussed reasons why we see so many Ds and Fs at this point in the year and programs we have implemented to help students (after school program, climb time).
  1. TSSP/Land Trust
    1. Budget
      1. Discussed possibility of using funds for buses to improve access to the after school program for students
  1. School Safety Report
    1. Discussed: Via email – Motion made by Kim Adams to approve, seconded by Aimee Payne. All In favor – Non opposed.
      1. Last drill (lockdown) and differences between types of emergency protocols (secure vs lockdown)
      2.  Incident last week (secure and early release). Parents shared concern that follow-up communication letting parents know they can keep their students home was more concerning than initial communication.
      3. School safety plan concerns that parents and district have noticed
        1. Kids crossing NE corner near the church.
        2. Issues with students being in the road and hitting busses when busses are leaving.

    2. Jana Mumford (school librarian & digital citizenship coordinator) and Albert De Alba (field tech) shared digital safety updates and addressed questions in the digital safety plan with council

      2. Does the SCC feel it has received enough information to determine if the filtering systems and supervision practices are appropriate? Yes
      3. Does the SCC feel it has received enough information about the school’s educational efforts to instill in students a desire to be good digital citizens? Yes
      4. Does the SCC believe the school has a viable plan to present important Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship information to families in the community? Yes

    4. Safe Walking Routes:
      1. Discussion:   Motion made by Kim Adams to approve, seconded by Aimee Payne. All In favor – Non opposed.
      2. shared map, current plan, safety concerns, and suggestions for the plan
      3. Concern about safety on buses. Admin shared that buses are considered an extension of the classroom and that school and district policies apply. Transportation has increased training of  drivers to help them ensure safety on the bus
      4. New sign for exit on the south side reminding people traffic patterns (current one is old and faded
      5. An increase of people going to wrong way into the school (new/bigger signage may be needed)
  1. Counselor’s Report
    1. Counselors are finishing up meetings with 6th graders (review early warning signs) along with wellness lesson; 8th grade lessons on career interests; 7th grade lessons on “reality check” which deals with the costs of adult living
